Close to the banks or the River Avon the Holy Trinity Church Stratford-Upon-Avon is one of Britain’s most visited parish churches in one of the most beautiful and picturesque backgrounds and a much sought out retreat if the hustle and bustle of the town is proving too much.
The church is the final resting place of William Shakespeare and his wife Anne Hathaway and indeed is locally known as 'Shakespeare's church'. In his childhood William would have attended mass here. His body is said to have been buried nears seven metres down to prevent anyone from stealing his remains and a stone slab above his grave reads:
'Good friend, for Jesus' sake forbear,
To dig the dust enclosed here.
Blest be the man that spares these stones,
But cursed be he that moves my bones.'
The church itself has several large stained glass windows depicting some of England’s saints and the resurrection and ascension of Christ,
The Holy Trinity Church Stratford-Upon-Avon is open to visitors for most of the year and a small charge is requested to gain access to the chancel and sanctuary where William Shakespeare is buried. Disabled access is available for those who wish to access the church by ramp as well as 'Order of Service' provided on Braille on request.
